England and Welsh Placed Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
