Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
