The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to question specific decisions made by the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
